Turley 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel

I enjoyed the Turley 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel last night with dinner (April 10, 2010). It paired nicely with some highly flavorful and robustly seasoned salmon, couscous and asparagus.  This Zin is beautiful – not too jammy like many zins are these days (not that there’s anything wrong with jammy…).  It’s appropriately spicy and peppery, with plum and berry notes interwoven giving it a lovely balance of flavors. It’s great on the nose and finishes nicely, too. I would definitely want to purchase this wine again, but I’m not sure it’s quite worth the money. I also hear the folks at the winery can be snobby, which is a huge turn-off read more…to me. I mean, really…do we need to be full of ourselves?? These reasons knock this from a “5″ to a “4″ rating for me. But if you’ve had a different experience at the winery and/or if you don’t mind snooty folks when you go tasting, then the wine, in and of itself, is lovely. You can find this wine for anything between $50 and $100 depending on where you buy it.  Don’t ask me why the price spread is so huge.  I have no idea.  If you would like to follow these reviews on Facebook, please visit the OC Wine and Lifestyle fan page.  If you would like information on homes in Orange County, please visit my website at http://www.kathyschager.com/.  Happy Tasting!

Antonello Ristorante, South Coast

Dined at Antonello’s this weekend, and the experience was wonderful, as always.  This restaurant has an impeccable combination of delicious, fresh food, wonderful service, and a fantastic ambience.  I would recommend the Gnoccetti or the Ravioli di Ricotta & Spinaci.  Both are wonderful dishes, and the minestrone soup is… very good, too.  Many of the servers here have actually come to the states from Italy, adding to the authenticity of the experience.  The restaurant has also been featuring an “Economic Stimulus” wine list, with some fantastic selections from which to choose. I would recommend the 2003 Brunello di Montalcino, from Castiglion Del Bosco in Tuscany.  It’s a very dry red, made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, but bold, robust, wonderful on the palate with a smooth finish.  This restaurant is fantastic for romantic dinners or dining with friends.  Enjoy!
